Researchers have long hoped that transplanting insulin-producing islet cells into type one diabetics would eliminate their need for insulin injections. Only a handful of transplant patients have actually achieved insulin independence, but there may be another, more important benefit: two-thirds of those patients stopped experiencing severe drops in blood sugar levels, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine.
