Ajo Blues

When you live in a county nearly the size of Massachusetts, only with 15 million fewer residents, there are bound to be under served medical areas but the situation in Ajo is worth noting.

In the 1970s, with the mines thriving, there was a relatively modern hospital and a good medical staff. As the mines declined, several physicians stayed on and served the community. Today the town's population is below 3,500, despite being named one of the best and most affordable places to retire in the U.S. and it is served by a a federally qualified health center that has to send 40% of labs elsewhere and must put all but routine health visits on the road to...Phoenix.

The Arizona Daily Star had a nice piece on places in Arizona where health risk is highest because of lack of facilities and distance to care. Ajo was the only site in Pima County mentioned.

To make pricing work, health plans under the Affordable Care Act need young healthy people to pay in. While responsible young people have surprised many in the numbers signing up, numbers are still below the estimates needed to make the ACA remain affordable.

President Obama is nothing but game, however. He appeared on a Spanish-language conference call and forum. He has targeted youth in ads and letters. His latest effort may not appeal to lovers of presidential dignity, but it's dead on for the age 25-34 demographic.

Appearing on "Between the Ferns," on the popular Funny or Die Internet posts by Hollywood comics, the presidents submits to questioning by Zach Galifianakis - whose questions border on the offensive - in order to sell Healthcare.gov.
